United States Academic Esports League & Future Business Leaders of America Esports Competition

Competition Overview

The FBLA esports Competition will test a team’s ability to research and create strategies to effectively compete in a virtual esports competition. Teams will submit a research paper on the provided esports topic, compete in an esports tournament, and create a presentation highlighting strategies used and lessons learned.

FBLA will provide its members with the opportunity to compete in an academic esports competition, in collaboration with USA Esports League (USAEL) and Rally Cry.  The FBLA Rocket League Esports Competition will revolve around the topic of esports with a virtual playing of the game Rocket League in a national competition. This competition will take place over three academic parts designed to challenge and engage students nationwide in the arena of esports.

Competition Play:

Part 1 (Academic): The initial stage will require student participants to submit a one- to two-page research paper exploring various facets of esports, showcasing their depth of understanding and analysis of this rapidly evolving industry.

As competitive video gaming grows in popularity and esports balloons into a multi-billion-dollar global phenomenon, a myriad of career opportunities have arisen that extend beyond just playing the games. Research shows the benefits of, and steps to, starting an esports team, the aptitudes needed by teammates to successfully compete, and the workforce-ready skills that are learned by people who participate in competitive gaming.

Part 1 will require student participants to write a 1-2 page paper on the career potential and benefits of participating in an esports competition. Students will be judged
on the following criteria: Skills learned creating an esports team, team building skills, the role of technology plays in esports, the career-readiness skills and the transferable skills that are developed by participants.

Part 2 (Game Play): Schools from across the country will engage in a virtual team competition – 3v3, single elimination bracket-style competition with the winners advancing through regional virtual competitions.

Part 3: (Presentation): The top ten (10) teams from the first two parts will deliver a collaborative presentation emphasizing team growth and success by reflecting on their experiences and articulating the essential elements that contributed to effective teamwork, critical thinking, leadership, and planning.
